MARCHE

Itineraries of the Region Marche

TRAVELING BETWEEN HILLS AND MOUNTAINS TO DISCOVER THE LACRIMA MORRO D'ALBA

Our journey begins in the discovery of the Lacrima Morro d'Alba among the wineries that produce it:  thanks to the tradition and to some producers in the territory's pride all the stocks of Vitis vinifera grape cultivated with Lacrima vine obtained DOC denomination, otherwise would have been explanted in favor of others. It is said that the name "Lacrima" comes from the fact that some berries, when fully mature, break and, consequently, "shed tears". Initially the DOC area included only Morro d'Alba, now the area has been extended to surrounding towns, too. Morro d'Alba is our starting point, heart of the homonymous denomination, and we continue towards the inland, in the area marked by the River Esino path: an area characterized by gently rolling hills where, on our way, we can see villages as Belvedere Ostrense, Ostra Vetere, Serra de Conti and Montecarotto and then we continue towards the Apennines with Maiolati Spontini and Castelplanio. In our journey will be touched some towns included in the probably most famous denomination of the region: the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi. These are the steps of an itinerary where art, history and nature will satisfy even the most demanding visitors thanks to its beauty and variety of places.
MORRO D’ALBA
Highway A14, exit Senigallia, direction Ostra, after about 8 km you will find a crossroads for Morro d'Aba (16 km from the exit); Highway A14, exit Ancona Nord, direction Chiaravalle, then Monte San Vito, and finally Morro d'Alba (14 km from the exit ); Throughout history Morro d'Alba has undergone several changes of its name (from Morro to Morro Senigalliese, to Morro di Jesi to Morro d'Alba). The current designation was given in 1862 following a Board resolution of the town of Morro. It has the distinction of being the only fortified town in Italy, having walls crossed, along their entire length by a walkway, covered and equipped with arcades: the famous "Scarpa". This city wall has the shape of an irregular pentagon with six bastions. In the course of time has undergone several renovations including one, built in 1654, during which it was authorized the construction of houses within the walls. To visit the Town Hall and the Church of San Gaudenzio, both from eighteenth-century, and the Museum of sharecropping art, which houses many objects from traditional work.

One of these was built on the highest hill from which the name "Belvedere". FROM ASCOLI PICENO TO FERMO

The itinerary starts from Ascoli Piceno, one of the most fascinating cities of central Italy, and discovering affirmed denominations like Rosso Piceno Superiore and Falerio dei Colli Ascolani, goes down to Fermo, a few steps from the sea passing through small villages brimmed with history and culture as Castel di Lama, Acquaviva Picena, Ripatransone.
ASCOLI PICENOHighway A14. Exit: Ascoli Piceno. Take the RA11 to the exit: direction Via Adriatico, which leads directly to the city.
Known as the "city of hundred towers" Ascoli Piceno with its architecture shows signs of a majestic past. It is a medieval city, characterized by the travertine warm tones and touched by Tronto and Castellano rivers. In the heart of the city we find some of the most beautiful Renaissance squares of the Marche, as Piazza del Popolo with its Palazzo dei Capitani and the Church of St. Francis.
Here every year in the first week of August takes place, the knightly tournament of Quintana, that sees the presence of 700 locals in traditional costume. In every corner of the city's Roman ruins such as the Augustan theater and bridge, churches, Renaissance palaces and noble towers recall the glories of the past. The Cathedral of St. Emidio, in Piazza Arringo strikes with its incomplete façade designed by Cola dell'Amatrice, the Town Hall houses an art gallery with important works by Tintoretto, and Carlo Crivelli. In the same square also seats the Archaeological Museum with Valley of the Tronto and the necropolis of Castel Trosino finds from the Neolithic to the Iron Age.

CASTEL DI LAMAThe town of Castel di Lama takes its name from the Lama stream that crosses its territory together with the Tosa and the Chifene streams, overlooking the Tronto's valley. Despite the name, Castel di Lama was never a castle, intended as center of aggregation of the village, but a territory made up of isolated estates that were probably guarded by fortified places, including a castellum Lamae, cited in 1381, who gave then the name of the current residential settlement. Even today, scattered settlements, usually country villas, dot the entire area, cultivated with olive trees, vineyards and fruit trees, all crops existing since the Roman period.
The most important church is the parish church of St. Maria in Mignano, in the village Piattoni, founded in 1506 and center of the Renaissance town center, in addition to the Sanctuary of the Madonna degli Angeli, in the district Chiarini. The characteristic appearance of the area is given by the presence of many noble villas, perhaps rustic Roman villas' ancient heritage, mostly built during the eighteenth century. The largest one is Villa Seghetti-Panichi, former residence of Odoardi, one of the most illustrious families of Ascoli, which was probably assigned this territory to as a fief from the fourteenth century .. The villa is located in the same place, which is identified by some scholars as the original site of the castellum Lamae and it's surrounded by an ornamental garden, where in summer are held concerts open to the public.

From here you can enjoy an absolute beautiful panorama, with vineyards expances that give Rosso Piceno Superiore and White Falerio. The Sibillini Mountains complete the setting and are the background to some typical manifestations of the village: the Palio of the Duke in early August and the Festival Acquaviva in comics on the third week of July.

It consists of three production centers respectively in Montecarotto, one of the most beautiful castles in Vallesina; in Camerano, on the slopes of Mount Conero, and in Acquaviva in the Piceno land. The vineyard has 844 hectares in the Verdicchio area, 178 hectares in the Conero area and 634 hectares in the Piceno area. 94% of the surface is for the production of DOC and IGT wines. The company's philosophy, which has always inspired reliability and consistency in the work, expresses the tendency to produce high quality, enriched by an important organic production, which indulge the taste of each consumer.
RIPATRANSONEFrom Acquaviva Picena along a road characterized by a very pleasant landscape we reach Ripatransone, a town that boasts the nickname "the Belvedere del Piceno". Ripatransone boasts an incoparable view from the Gran Sasso to Monti Sibillini from the Conero to the Gransasso until the Dalmatian coast. Inhabited since prehistoric times, was an important center of Picena civility (IX-III century BC) with its inaccessible position. In later periods its importance grew up to be elevated to an episcopal city in 1571. One of its main features is the rich historical and artistic heritage, recognized and felt by its citizens to whom we owe the foundation of the Civic Museum since 1877.
Today Ripatransone has several museums and collections included within a single museum complex which belong its museums, the historical archive, the rich library, the Civic Archaeological Museum, Palazzo Bonomi collections as the Art Gallery (works by Crivelli , Fazzini, etc..), the gipsothèque Uno Gera, the Renaissance Museum and the ethnographic museum with world curiosity. The center is medieval in its urban settlement, with Renaissance and Baroque buildings even if eighteenth and late nineteenth century noble palaces, especially visible along Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, a major axis that crosses the city from south to north. Of the ancient walls (fifteenth-sixteenth century) remain the Tower with Monte Antico Gate (fifteenth-sixteenth century), a second tower with Ghibellines merlons so restored in 1958, San Domenico Gate, Cuprense Gateand and the Tower with the Gate called Donna Bianca (White Woman).

FERMOOn top of Sabulo mountain, rises the ancient city of Fermo, a Roman colony, dominated by the imposing Cathedral, whose square offers a beautiful view. The territory is a happy synthesis of sea and hills, ranging from the wide beaches of Lido di Fermo, Casabianca and Marina Palmense, to the charming center of Torre di Palme, perched on a spur overlooking the sea, in a panoramic position on the Adriatic is situated Capodarco, too. The imposing Romanesque - Gothic Cathedral is located in the scenic square of Girifalco, which corresponds to the acropolis of the Piceni people.
Fermo is a very much alive center on a cultural level, thanks to the intense activity of the Aquila Theatre and the many events that occur during the year: the typical carnival, the months of July and August events with GustaFermo, and the typical Cavalcade and Palio dell'Assunta around mid August.

DISCOVERING ROSSO CONERO

"Historical" wine of this land, we found quotes already in Plinius, crossing some of the Benedictine monks documents where treatments based on these grapes are mentioned, up to Giacomo Leopardi; it was born in a beautiful promontory inside Parco del Conero. The nature of this itinerary is extraordinary beautiful, leaving from Ancona is possible to discover all the pearls of the coast as Portonovo, Sirolo and Numana up to Osimo.

Among the major monuments of the city, the cathedral of San Ciriaco, with pink and white marble facade and the Greek cross plan, which dominates the city from the top of the hill Guasco, in ancient times here stood the acropolis of the city (visible some remains). The National Archaeological Museum of Marche, divided into several sections, preserves many remains from the Iron Age and from the civilizations that inhabited the Adriatic coast (Piceni, Greeks and Romans). The Church of St. Maria della Piazza, of Romanesque origin, dating from the eleventh century, Trajan's Arch, built in the second century by Apollodorus from Damascus and the Mole Vanvitelliana, a huge military building designed by Vanvitelli (hence the name) in the eighteenth century.

PORTONOVO
From Ancona follows directions for Camerano, Poggio, Portonovo.
The territory of Portonovo, part of the Conero, a mountain inhabited since prehistoric times, follows its fortunes: Piceno, Doric, Roman, Byzantine, Papal States, France, and finally, Italian. Only a trace of the monastic life that distinguishes this area in the Middle Ages, with hermits in search of silence and solitude, is the beautiful church of S. Maria Roman masterpiece (eleventh century). Along its beach, landing place, and booty area for Turkish ships, you meet significant historical sites: the Tower of Guard erected in the eighteenth century in defense from the pirates, and the Napoleonic Fort, a military bulwark now used as a hotel.

SIROLO Continuing south we arrive in Sirolo. The etymology of the city's name probably comes from Sirius, the leader in the wake of Belisarius, which was attributed this territory after the victory over the Goths around 560 AD. In the Middle Ages  was built the fortress as defense from the incursions of barbarians and pirates. Later it became a fief of the Cortesi Counts (eleventh century) Franco-Germanic origin nobles, who, in 1225, gave the Rock to Ancona. In 1038 the same Cortesi gave to the Benedictine the abbey at the top of the mountain, now the Church of St. Peter and the surrounding land. Later the town will become property of the Papal States, under whose rule have been founded the churches  of S. Nicolò and the Church del Rosario.
NUMANA
Continuing in a southerly direction, just after Sirolo we meet Numana, ancient Piceno port reconstructed by the the Syracusans, from the fifth century BC. The town, already famous at the time of the Athenians had been  goods distribution center inward and towards the middle Adriatic. Then it became a colony and then a Roman municipium; in the Middle Ages gradually decayed due to earthquakes and looting .. In recent years, from humble fishing village has turned into a modern tourist city, still maintaining a good balance with the historical center. Picene culture evidences are preserved in the Archaeological Museum in Ancona and in the Numana Antiquarium, currently only partially opened. Symbol ideas of the town are the tower, the arch of still unknown origins, and the folk and characteristic Costarella alley that in summer is transformed in a natural setting for art exhibitions.

Located just south of Monte Conero, just a few hundred meters from the sea, the winery was built in stone in the late ninth century. From a description that made Mario Soldati in 1971, little has changed: new specialized vineyards have been planted, the winery has been endowed with modern and efficient equipment, but the company choice is still the same, production of wines with their grapes to ensure the origin and the typicality. Thus, to more traditional wines, such as Rosso Conero, have been joined others to confirm their wish of modernizing fused with tradition. Visits by appointment.

CAMERANO
From Ancona, still inside the Conero Park, take the provincial road 2. After about four km climb to the right, continuing along the provincial Cameranense road (number 7) for another four kilometers. The city owe its notoriety to the painter Carlo Maratta, to whom has been dedicated a bust in the central square, Piazza Roma. Inside the square you can see the Manciforte Theatre and Palace. Is well worth seeing the Church of S. Francesco, which can be reached from Central Square going into Via Mentre if we take Via S. Apollinare or via S. Francesco, the church of S. Faustina (which contains a painting of Maratta school and a medallion of the famous painter's daughter) and the Parish Church reachable from the square by Via Maratta. It's 'important to remember that another characteristic of the city is its subsoil, from which runs a network of caves.

LORETO
Left Osimo and continuing along the Musone river and the countryside we rise to Loreto: just before we recommend a stop in Castelfidardo famous because it keeps alive the accordion production and houses an interesting Accordion International museum with over 150 examples that tell of the history and the evolution, starting from the first craft shop opened in 1963. In Loreto, privileged destination for devotional tourism, there is one of the most famous Marian Shrines of Italy. It's said that in 1929 the House of Nazareth, where Mary lived, was carried by angels in flight on the hill near the river to escape the invasion of Palestine by the Mohammedans. A few years later it was moved to the current Shrine of the Holy House's site, which began in the fifth century and completed in the eighth, with works by some of the greatest Italian artists: Giuliano Sangallo, author of the dome above the house, Giuliano da Maiano, the Bramante, Andrea Sansovino and others. In the gothic interior of the sanctuary, the Holy House, now entirely covered with marble bas-reliefs, holds the statue of the Black Madonna and Child, in cedar wood, St. Mark and St. John's vestries are decorated with frescoes by Melozzo from Forlì and Luca Signorelli. It is advisable to visit the room of the Pomarancio, annexed to the Basilica, with frescoes on the vault, and crucifix on the artist's altar.

Via Arno, 9 60025 LORETO - (AN) Tel: +39 071 7820162 Fax: +39 071 7821437.

The origins of Garofoli Wine House go back in the nineteenth century when Antonio Garofoli, in 1871, had already began the production and sale of local wines. His son Gioacchino continued and expanded the business that his father founded in 1901, Gioacchino Garofoli Wine House. His two sons, Franco and Dante, succeeded him in running the company after the Second World War. Gioacchino Garofoli in 1950 became a company and started a process of strong growth. Following tradition, Franco's sons, Carlo and Gianfranco, joined the family company since the early 70s.
The history of Garofoli Wine House is a story of men and a family that for five generations have  been identified in the wine production world. Always the same philosophy has guided the company: continuous updating of production techniques, but respect for the traditional and historical wine making, attention to the evolution of the market and its needs but loyalty to the value of the peculiarity that the territory traditions have passed.
